FIRST HIKE OF THE YEAR!

We are already almost two weeks into the new year and as of January 9th, I took my first hike to kickstart 2023.

It is also the first hike of my 52 Hike Challenge.

Hike #1:

Location: Bays Mountain Planetarium & Park

Trail: Fire Tower Trail

Distance: 4.38 miles

Time: 2.5 hours

The first hike of the year went pretty well. It was 37 degrees but I did dress appropriately with 3 layers. I also kept a 'Hot Hand' warmer in my pocket for extra warmth - we were up in the mountain, so it was cold! I was very familiar with the trail I was on - I have been a long-time hiker at Bays Mountain so I knew where I was going - but if you plan to visit Bays Mountain, they will provide you with a park map that does include every trail.

As a solo hiker, I do share my location with several people. I carry safety gear for protection and a hydration pack to keep myself hydrated. Technically, I guess you cannot fully deem me a solo hiker because I do bring along my Border Collie mix, Harley Quinn, on the adventure. I could definitely tell from this hike I was out of shape - I have not hiked in over a year.

Plus, I learned that it's time for some new hiking boots! - mine have officially given up.

This hike made me realize that I have missed being outdoors. It is a great way for me to keep in shape and boost my mental health. If you need some sort of outlet, I really do recommend going outdoors and enjoying a short hike or nature walk.

It really does make a difference, with me anyways!
